Plaque is a sticky film containing bacteria that forms on teeth and gums. If not removed, it hardens to form tartar or calculus. The bacteria in plaque and calculus can cause tissue inflammation (gingivitis), and if not resolved, will eventually lead to bone loss and even tooth loss (periodontal disease). Regular cleanings are essential to maintaining healthy teeth, gums, and supporting bone. A thorough assessment is done on each individual to determine how frequently one should have their teeth cleaned. Regular checkups will also detect problems early, before they become large problems.
